This passion led to more than just delicious
food; it built her confidence. Through
competitions and earning scholarships, Amilla
began to see her craft not just as a hobby but
as a source of pride and purpose. "I feel like
now I’m more open to cooking as a gesture or
gift," she says.
A Network of Support
While her own determination was key, Amilla
is quick to credit the people who helped her
along the way. She speaks of her aunt, who
was a constant source of motivation, always
reminding her that "there's gold at the end of
the rainbow."
Her church community also provided a crucial
foundation. They became a family, offering
unwavering support during tough times. "They
were a family to me and that meant that I
always had someone here for me no matter the
situation," she shares.
Additionally, her coaches played an integral
role in shaping her mindset. "My coaches
definitely helped me find my inner strength and
become a mentally stronger person," she states,
acknowledging them as mentors and leaders.
From Struggle to Service
The pivotal shift from struggle to purpose
became crystal clear for Amilla when she
enlisted in the army. It was then that she felt a
path was being laid out for her, one that would
lead her to a career of service.
Inspired by a desire to be surrounded by a
strong community and culture, Amila chose to
pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at
Prairie View A&M University. She was
particularly moved by the alumni and current
students who exemplified a high standard of
academic excellence and community spirit.

For Amilla, being a nurse, especially a Certified
Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), is about more
than just a job; it's about being a source of security
and care. "As a nurse you can sometimes be the first
face a person sees in a time of chaos and also the last,"
she explains. Her goal is to ensure every patient feels
"seen, heard, and cared for," embodying the very
support she was lucky enough to receive.
Graduating with honors, a significant achievement
given her journey, is a symbol of all the hard work
and investment she's made in herself. This
scholarship from S.T.A.F.F. will help alleviate the
financial stress of college, allowing her to focus
entirely on her studies and her future.
When asked what she would tell other students
facing similar struggles, her message is powerful and
personal: "Sometimes you’re going to feel alone and
unseen so you have to make sure that you see your
worth first and understand that you have a purpose
and a place in the world."
Amilla Wilson's story is a beautiful reminder that
even when the path is difficult, with resilience and
the right support, you can rewrite your story with
strength, purpose, and hope.
